Psalm 27:4

One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. (NIV)

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' "(Acts 2:14-21)

God Has Plans For You

"For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11(NLT)

Nothing Can Separate us from God’s Love

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39(NLT)

Christ Will Make His Home in Your Hearts as You Trust in Him

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Ephesians 3:17-19(NLT)

The Toughest Part is Getting Started

"Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, 'Go south to the road -- the desert road -- that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.' So he started out..." Acts 8:26-27a

Phillip had this really big ministry going on in Samaria. He had started it; run into some difficulties; and solved those problems with the support of Peter and John (the big guns from the Jerusalem church). Now it was flourishing -- people were hearing, believing and being baptized. It was growing and it was perfect.

Have you ever felt that way before? A new job, project, or ministry was tough at first but with a little help and a lot of hard work -- it was now successfully sailing along (almost on auto-pilot). Then God says "Go to _________." For me, this is the most challenging part of my Christian walk -- leaving behind the familiar and getting started in a new direction. I have a tendency to say, "Wait Lord; isn't what I'm doing good? I'm just now beginning to make a big impact. Can't I stay here for a while longer and enjoy the fruit of my labor?" The Lord's answer (from verse 26), "Go south on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza."

At this point we all have a choice to make -- pretend we don't hear the Lord and do what we've been doing; or change direction. Verse 27 tells us what Phillip did, "So he started out..." Phillip conquered his doubts and trusted God. I think that's why being a Christian is so often referred to as a "path," "journey," "road," and so on. It's also why it is so rewarding, interesting, exciting and frustrating -- we are not in control, yet God is able to use our unique talents and abilities in ways we could never imagine. The key is getting started. How do we get started? By taking the first step -- it's the way to begin anything -- stop thinking about all the pros and cons and get moving. An act of obedience in faith is the cornerstone to a joyful and fulfilling life in Christ.

Questions to Ponder:

Over the years, what have been some of your "acts of obedience"? Have you ever chosen to not obey? What was the outcome? What about when you overcame your doubt and you started in a new direction -- what was the outcome? Is God giving you a new direction today? Will you take the first step?

Drawing Near to Him in Prayer

How shall I tell you what to draw near to God is? It is prayer, but it is more than prayer. I bow my knee, and I begin to ask the Lord to help me in my time of trouble. I tell him what my trial is. I put up my requests, uttering them with such words as his Holy Spirit giveth me on the occasion; but this alone is not drawing near to God. Prayer is the modus operandi, it is the outward form of drawing near to God; but there is an inner spiritual approach which is scarcely to be described by language.

Shall I tell you how I have sometimes drawn near to him? I have been worn and wearied with a heavy burden, and have resorted to prayer. I have tried to pour out my soul’s anguish in words, but there was not vent enough by way of speech, and therefore my soul has broken out into sighs, and sobs, and tears. Feeling that God was hearing my heart-talk, I have said to him, “Lord, behold my affliction; thou knowest all about it, deliver me. If I cannot exactly tell thee, there is no need of my words, for thou dost see for thyself. Thou searcher of hearts, thou readest me as I read in a book; wilt thou be pleased to help thy poor servant! I scarce know what help it is I want, but thou dost know it. I cannot tell thee what I desire, but teach me to desire what thou wilt be sure to give. Conform my will to thine.”

Perhaps at such a time there may be a peculiar bitterness about your trouble, a secret with which no stranger may intermeddle, but you tell it all out to your God. With broken words, sighs, groans, and tears, you lay bare the inmost secret of your soul. Taking off the doors of your heart from their hinges, you bid the Lord come in, and walk through every chamber, and see the whole. I do not know how to tell you what drawing near to God is better than by this rambling talk. It is getting to feel that the Lord is close to you, and that you have no secret which you wish to keep back from him, but have unveiled your most private and sacred desires to him. The getting right up to Jesus, our Lord, the leaning of the head, when it aches with trouble, upon the heart that always beats with pity, the casting of all care upon him, believing that he cares for you, pities you, and sympathises with you — this is drawing near unto God. It is good for me to draw near unto God, if this be what drawing near to God is.

You Are God's Conduit

It is God who works in you... Philippians 2:13 NKJV

A conduit is a channel through which things like water and electricity move from one point to another, and you are God's conduit! You are designed to be a free-flowing channel for Jesus Christ Himself. God has chosen you to be His 'change-agent' in the earth. In the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:10) the original Greek says, 'Come thy kingdom. Be done thy will' Jesus no longer walks among us physically, but He has given us His mandate and all the power we need to carry it out. In other words, it's going to happen through you. God promised 'Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours… ' (Deuteronomy 11:24 NKJV). We bring the influence and benefits of God's kingdom wherever we go. The problem is, our 'receivers' don't always work. It takes faith to believe we actually hear God's instructions, just as it takes faith to believe an unseen radio wave is passing through our living rooms. Because we're confident of that reality, we tune in, receive and transmit.

Scientists tell us that the greatest metal conduit is pure gold. According to the Bible, 'the genuineness of your faith… much more precious than gold… ' (1 Peter 1:7NKJV). Certain obstacles can block our ability to receive and be conduits for God. If our hearts are hard, our wires are down, or if we're unaware of our identity as conduits, we go through life without tapping into the power God's given us. We must be full of the Word of God, and most importantly, spend time in intimacy with the Lord in order to be God's conduit.

Don't Hold Your Breath

"No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God." 1 John 3:9 (NIV)
The person born of God will not continue to sin. They cannot go on sinning. Really? How can this be? The reason why the Christian will not and cannot continue in sin is because he is born of God and God's seed remains in him. The new birth makes continuing in sin impossible.

If sin is your friend, God is your enemy. If God is your friend, sin is your enemy. James says, "Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God." (James 4:4) But the Christian is never wholly free from sin in this life. Indeed anyone, (including any Christian), who says or even thinks he is without sin deceives himself. (1 John 1:8)

You can't live under water
When a child is in the womb, that life is surrounded by water. The child lives in the water, not in the air. As soon as the child's first breath is taken, the nature of its life is changed. From that moment on, the child can no longer live in the water. The child has a new life that's lived in the air.

The child can be in water, swim though water, and even go under the water. You can hold your breath and stay under water for 30 seconds or a minute, or more. But you cannot continue under the water.

What once was your life is no longer possible for you. You cannot go back to it. Being born has changed the nature of your life. What used to be natural has now become, not just difficult, but impossible.

You can't live in sin
That's what it is like when you are born again. When you are born again you cannot continue in sin. The sinner is comfortable with sin. It doesn't bother him. But when you are born again, your conscience is activated. You can't settle with something that you know is wrong in your life. Holding onto a sin for a Christian is like holding your breath under water. It takes a great effort and you can't do it for long.

In the new birth God becomes your friend, and sin becomes your enemy. You can't live with sin like you did when sin was your friend. You turn from it. And when you fall into sin you turn from it again.

Repentance is a life-long process. We learned before that repentance is: turning from as much as you know of your sin, to give as much as you know of yourself, to as much as you know of God. That's a lifetime pursuit, and it begins with the new birth.
